Mathematics, overlooked as it is, is the most fundamental subject in our educational system and is THE enabling tool to solving problems. My commitment to maths stems from my recognition that as an effective problem solver, one ought to understand what is expected to resolve day-to-day difficulties. Mathematical proofs combine both logic and creativity and it is the beauty of maths as well as practicality which makes me want to study it further.
We are encompassed by mathematics; it surrounds us. My pursuit in maths broadened when I stumbled across a YouTube video from ‘Numberphile’, I began to see the subject in a different light; it was more than just an academic subject studied for a specified number of hours per week. Instead I grasped that it was a way of explaining the inexplicable. Throughout my maths AS Level, I realised that I was acquiring an alarming passion for proofs. Combining this growing interest with reading books in the subject I appreciated that I had previously not understood how important meticulous working was until I learnt that it is essential to trace errors and eradicate assumptions and that simply having the right answer is insufficient. From Chemistry I have similarly learnt how to use meticulous working and designing experiments to solve problems, analyse and understand data. Through these pragmatic skills I have been able to bridge the gap between A-level and university maths and almost feel euphoria from the sense that there may be a higher knowledge still to be unearthed which, of we are as yet unaware.
Changing school and adjusting to the new style of learning was an issue that contributed to my underachievement at AS level, but I have gained further understanding of my subjects and am currently demonstrating how much of an improvement I will make in my upcoming exams and retakes through better exam technique.
Being selected as a maths prefect has given me the opportunity to help younger students and promote my passion for the subject to many younger students through open evenings, displays and assisting in lessons. As much as I believe in motivation coming from within, this can also lead us to think that we do maths entirely for its own sake. However that is apocryphal: the communal aspect of maths which enables us to be stimulated by the people around us and help other people solve their mathematical problems is crucially important.
Music is a mind-body exercise; you learn to become one with your body and mind while discovering how to be in harmony with the people around you. I am heavily involved in my church, my previous and current school’s choirs, where I have been lucky enough to perform at various prestigious events. While having fun, to my amazement I was actually developing my numbers, logic, discipline, agility, and maths through reading music. I have participated in drama performances for ‘The School’s Shakespeare Festival’ where I have travelled to many theatres to perform plays such as ‘The Twelfth Night’, and ‘Much Ado about Nothing’ and have become familiar with good memory skills through learning Shakespearian lines. My communication skills have also improved significantly through this involvement with drama.
Teamwork has been a fundamental attribute that I have learnt during my school career. I participated in a school enterprise week where groups competed to create their own products, and as team leader and financial manager, I helped my team beat our competitors by fostering a group atmosphere and will to win, which we did. I was given the opportunity show my inner creative business side, work with others and apply maths skills to real life.
Unlike other subjects which thrive on unsettled debates, give no final answers and allow you to work in isolation, Maths places high priority on comprehension, listening to others’ ideas and perceptions, which allows the subject to operate more efficiently in the intellectual world hence why I am set to study a degree in Maths.

A recent trip to the Royal Courts of Justice reaffirmed my interest in law and criminology degree. Firstly, I sat in on cases which particularly interested me as I was able to see court in practice. Secondly, I also took part in a mooting case within a court room, presenting my case as a barrister to the judge, which made me realise that I would love to do this as my future career. Therefore, studying law and criminology appeals to me even more to help me with my career ambitions. I love the criminal side of the law and the statutes behind criminal acts. I find the cause of crime to be of interest to me, as well and I love focusing on different theories and perspectives as to why people commit crime.
My currents subject relate to my course of law and criminology. Within A-level Law I am learning parts of compulsory modules that are taught in university such as Criminal Law. I enjoy law as I find it interesting and I love learning about different cases that have occurred that are used in court today. In Law I am developing my critical analysis skill which enables me to present clear and concise points. In addition, Sociology relates as I am learning about crime and deviance, which relates to the criminology aspect. I enjoy learning about the different social aspects as to why people commit crime, such as subcultures and ethnicity. I recently achieved an A grade essay on the relationship between social problems and levels of crime. This is useful as it is an important aspect that will be taught in criminology. Psychology relates as it gives me an insight into the criminal mind. In psychology I particularly enjoyed the topic of eye witness testimonies and examining the different factors that can improve the reliability of eye witness testimonies like age, anxiety and misleading information.
One of my biggest achievements is being a volunteer police cadet for five years. Volunteer police cadets are partnered with the London Metropolitan Police Service. Being a volunteer police cadet has given me confidence, organisational skills, and made me more open to valuing other people’s opinions. I am able to communicate with people at all levels and within a team. I completed my two weeks’ work experience with the police force and had various opportunities to work with police officers gaining a further insight into law enforcement.
I also have a part-time job waitressing at a catering service. This job has enabled me to become more independent, organised with my time and how to use my own initiative. Furthermore, I play football; in secondary school I was on my school team and I was captain for both the junior and senior team. This was a big achievement as it showed my coach recognised the effort I made within the team. It taught me to be a team player and to use other people’s strengths to help when necessary. It also taught me to be a leader and communicate with my team. As well I play the guitar and I taught myself to play with only a few lessons. By learning the guitar it taught me to dedicate myself to a cause even if I found it hard.
Overall, I believe my passion for law and criminology comes across from all aspects, such as my recent visits to court rooms, my academic suitability, my voluntary experiences and my extra-curricular activities. I am particularly interested in joining the mooting club as I think it will be very interesting and it will further help me develop my skills and knowledge about the criminal side of law. I am keen to start university as I believe it will be a new stage in my life, which will teach me many vital lessons in which I will need in later life. Although I know it will require hard work, I am prepared to dedicate myself and I am excited to achieve my full potential.

To say that the world is “immoral” is perhaps an overtly harsh critique, but we do, as we always have, exist within a world of inequality and injustice. Whilst seemingly ever-present throughout human history, such pillars of societal dysfunction are not to be accepted, nor even tolerated; I believe that a more egalitarian redistribution of both material wealth and civil rights is a wholly achievable end toward which one can dedicate time, if not a lifetime.
The literature I have read, both in fiction and in political theory, has personally illuminated such truths and has subsequently moulded my beliefs; Charles Dickens’ ‘Bleak House’ is scathing in its rhetoric surrounding the oppressive and exploitative industrialisation of Victorian England, and the subsequent folly of aspiration that arose within the middle classes, whilst also criticising the failure of a bureaucratic legal system in desperate need of reform. By contrast, Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ extols the ability of a functioning legal defence to be the sole guardian of the oppressed in the face of systemic corruption and ingrained prejudice, and how, whilst ultimately unsuccessful, a virtuous man can utilise the law to illustrate the hysteria and injustice of a society. Evidently, art can illuminate the reality of dysfunction and injustice, however, crucially, I hold firm belief that the twin disciplines of Law and Politics are both the theoretical and practical tenets of enacting the desired and necessary change.
Legality is the impartial protector of the common man from his fellow man, his state and himself; a functioning legal system can ensure the ongoing coexistence and cooperation of all parties, free from oppressive force, both physical and nuanced. Legality and constitution can also provide defence against the tyranny of the establishment, whilst upholding the pillars of functioning society, and, in turn, political movement and theory can ensure the law remains useful and informed in its servitude of a population. Focusing upon the issue of change, one must understand both the law and the political state in order to critique those aspects that uphold undesirable injustice, and subsequently wield such knowledge to bring about “just” change.
I realise that mere exuberant interest and theory is not enough; I have exercised my enthusiasm wherever I have been able to over the past few years, both informing my specialist knowledge and developing the skills of organisation, leadership and meticulous study that will benefit my general capability. Having gained invaluable insight and experience working closely alongside former Member of Parliament David Drew for a year during an election campaign, whilst also frequenting proceedings at Cheltenham Magistrates Court, I have cultivated my interests in both the legal and the political; as a result, I wish to diligently pursue such study at a higher educational level.
To seek a greater purpose is to be fulfilled by even marginally improving the balance of socio-political justice that so affects the lives of the many and the vulnerable; I feel quite sure that undertaking study in the fields of Law and Politics, together or in specialisation, is the keystone to attaining this. Whatever one can achieve in a personal sense feels rather superficial when one considers the inconsequential amount of time gifted to each individual; the emphasis must be upon the collective, and change must be focused upon the systemic.
I approach higher education with a desire to strengthen and refine both my knowledge and my practical ability to influence the issues that I care so deeply about. Having a desire to indulge a personal interest in both political and legal matters, and having the means to do so, would provide me with a privilege that many do not have, and, as such, it feels only just that I should use my interest, and perhaps my aptitude, to aid the humane revolution, and play a small part in the defeat of the “immoral world”.
